Hello, friends! I know Morphe has always had a stigma around it because of big name YouTubers constantly pushing its products and their affiliate codes, so I’ve always been hesitant to try anything from the brand. I’m a huge skeptic, especially if I feel like someone is just trying to make a sale. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the brand’s products, so I wasn’t sure who to believe (as I’m sure many of you are as well). For years, I never really had an interest in any Morphe products, but in the past year, my eye caught the 35M Boss Mood palette due to its exquisite color story. I contemplated purchasing this for many months because I was skeptical about the quality of the shadows, especially because of the patchy results I got when I swatched a different Morphe palette in an Ulta store. However, now that I have it, I want to add my two cents to the Morphe debate. I have no affiliation whatsoever with Morphe, so you can be sure you are getting the complete, unfiltered truth. With that said, I present to you: the Morphe 35M Boss Mood palette.
In the past, I never had an interest in the Morphe palettes because even though there were 35 pans in each palette, a lot of the shades looked quite similar and the color story didn’t really stand out for me. The reason why the 35M Boss Mood palette stood out was that all 35 shades in it look distinctly unique. Of course, there are several shades of green, brown, etc., but they have different undertones and are limited to a few to where I don’t feel like I’m being overwhelmed with 20 similar shades of the same color. I didn’t have anything remotely similar to this in my collection, and I wanted to play around with the fun colors, especially the yellow green shades. What I like about this color story is that it features fun, typically bright shades in a somewhat muted way that makes it less intimidating for those who are beginner adventurers in the world of color.
I will say that the packaging is not exactly my favorite. I think it’s alright, but it’s just that. It just covers the basic functional design. I think the outer box is pretty sleek with the matte finish and contrasting shiny brush stroke detail. I also like the red on the side and think the brand’s “blend the rules” tagline is fun. The overall design is still pretty basic, but that’s the brand’s concept. The actual palette, however, reminds me of plastic CD covers because of the sound it makes when I tap my fingernails on it. The cover is a bit flimsy, but to the palette’s credit, the bottom does have a bit of weight to it so the overall palette doesn’t feel super cheap. Just to note, there is no mirror inside, and the palette attracts fingerprints. That doesn’t bother me, but I know it may bother some people, so I thought I’d mention it. Also, because the cover feels so thin and the overall palette is made of plastic, not to mention that it’s quite large, I feel like this palette would not work well in travel conditions. I’m afraid both the packaging and the product inside would break if this were to experience any shock.
As for the quality of the eyeshadows themselves, I feel like it’s not the best but it’s also not the worst. The texture of the mattes are quite powdery, but they don’t feel super chalky. It delivers a nice pigmentation that can be built up for stronger opacity but still deposits a solid amount of color the first time. Surprisingly, I found that I liked the mattes over the shimmers when applying on the eyes. Mattes are more prone to formulation errors than shimmers, but the matte eyeshadows in this palette were easier to use than the shimmers. The shimmers need to be buffed in a bit and built up for stronger opacity or used wet. The shimmers were just okay in that they could be finessed but weren’t anything amazing.
I can’t speak for other Morphe products, but this palette is pretty good. It’s certainly not the most pigmented eyeshadow palette I’ve ever tried; however, the colors are buildable to an good opacity. The shimmers are decent, but they need some building up, especially the two black-base shades. The mattes were pretty solid with one application but can be built up for stronger pigmentation if desired. The buildable pigmentation might actually be beneficial in that it allows for an easier blend, especially for beginners. Plus, it allows the shadows to appear not as bold, giving the look a colorful yet subdued effect. If you’re looking for pigment above anything else, this palette may not be the one for you, but if you’re fine with building up the pigmentation or prefer that low-key look and formulation, why not give this a try? It’s got a variety of non-mainstream colors to choose from. Plus, it’s pretty affordable at $25, and you can even score it at a discount (I used a 20% off coupon at Ulta).
I’m actually quite impressed with how these turned out. I expected the mattes to be patchy, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well the mattes performed. The shimmers, on the other hand, were a bit lackluster, but they were acceptable. I like the palette for its unique color selection that still feels wearable. It’s a great fall palette with its muted yet still bright color scheme. What I like most about the Morphe 35M Boss Mood palette over the other 35-pan Morphe palettes is that there is a variety of colors here to where I don’t feel like I’m buying 35 of basically the color. I can’t say Morphe makes my favorite eyeshadow formula, but I do see myself repurchasing from the brand. While this palette wasn’t necessarily the best of the best, the end result was rather good.
I’m excited to use this palette tomorrow for a trip to the local pumpkin patch. I’m planning on using the yellow green, orange, and pink shades to create a soft smokey eye. I feel like this is such a fun early fall palette, and I know I’m going to have a great time playing around with all the gorgeous colors. That’s it for this review of the Morphe 35M Boss Mood palette. I hope you had an enjoyable time reading this post and that it helped you determine whether this palette is something you’d enjoy or not. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!
Until next time,
