Hello and welcome back, friends! Can you believe we are halfway there to Christmas? It’s already day twelve of blogmas! For today’s post, I thought I would share my thoughts on the Topaz Obsessions palette by Huda Beauty.
I actually bought this palette during Huda Beauty’s secret sale during which all palettes were 50% off. I bought this palette as well as the amethyst one (review and swatches coming soon!), but regretted picking up only two because I love the size of the Obsessions palettes for traveling. I bought more during Black Friday (also stay tuned for a haul post coming soon! I’m just waiting on two Colourpop packages) because I just love how easy it is to take these palettes wherever I go. They fit in the palm of my hand and have a mirror inside. With the exception of the Nude Obsessions and the Neon Obsessions, these palettes are made of cardboard packaging, which means that they can withstand some level of shock. The only thing I would say that detracts from the Obsessions line being the ultimate travel eyeshadow palette is that, with the exception of the light nude palette (at least on me), the color stories lean more nighttime sultry and rich, making them not as easy to use for lighter, daytime looks.
As you can see above, this palette features many rich, sultry shades. There are five mattes and four shimmers, all of which are very warm. I think the colors are very beautiful, but when I think of topaz, I think of yellow. Although there is a yellow in this palette, the overall color story leans more orange and brown. So, I guess this palette is more like poppy topaz versus a true yellow topaz.
The mattes in this palettes swatched pretty well with the exception of the dark brown shadow. The dark brown shade swatched quite patchy, but applied very well with a brush. However, one thing to note is that even thought I tried packing on the brown with a brush, the overall effect looked diffused and very blended. It looked very nice and the color was quite dark, but don’t expect an opaque dark brown. It is indeed a dark brown, but the effect you get is very diffused and soft.
As for the shimmers, they are incredibly smooth and pigmented. The swatches above are with no primer underneath and applied dry. Even so, they look absolutely incredible. However, like I mentioned above, the colors lean more sultry on my medium skintone as there is no light shimmer, so just keep that in mind if you’re hoping to use this as an everyday palette. It’s not that much of an issue for me though because I can always use highlighter as an eyeshadow.
All in all, I think this palette is really beautiful. Even though the dark brown can’t be packed to full opacity, the diffused effect it gives works well with the rest of the colors in the palette and makes blending a breeze. I think this palette would look best during summer or fall because of the rich orange tones throughout.
