Hello, friends! Welcome to day eleven of blogmas! Today’s post features the Dominique Cosmetics Celestial Thunder palette. I’ve never purchased or tried any products from Dominique Cosmetics before, but I received this in my November 2019 BoxyCharm. The colors in this palette are definitely ones that I don’t have in my collection nor ones that I would go out and buy immediately, so it was nice to get this in my BoxyCharm box to play around with.
This palette is quite slim, which I really like. As some of you may know, I love palettes that I can travel with. I just love when I can easily store my palette away and it doesn’t take up a lot of unnecessary space. The packaging is made from cardboard, and the palette has a large mirror inside.
This palette features an octagonal motif with the pans and the mirror. There are eight shades in this palette (three glittery shimmers and five mattes) that revolve around a galactic theme. The pans are quite large as well. One thing to note is that Dominique Cosmetics actually has two similar palettes with the Celestial name: Celestial Thunder (this palette) and Celestial Storm. Celestial Storm actually has all the colors of this palette but includes four extra shades, so if you are looking for a bit more variety, you may consider looking into that one. However, before you go, let’s talk swatches and quality.
I would say the quality of this palette is not bad, but I am not a big fan of the glittery shimmers. The reason why I use the term “glittery shimmers” instead of just “glitter” or “shimmer” is because these eyeshadows have the base of a shimmer but include some slightly larger bits of glitter flecks as well. The texture is slightly gritty, and I worry about the safety of using these on the immediate eye area without some sort of glitter glue underneath. These aren’t as chunky as the Colourpop pressed glitters, but the glittery flecks do add a bit of gritty texture that may not appeal to everyone. I actually read online prior to testing out this palette in response to a YouTube comment from Christen Dominique herself that these shimmery shades are to be used as glitter toppers. Even so, I don’t think I would really reach for them. It’s definitely a preference of what sort of effect you’re going for with this palette.
I’ve included a close up of the glittery shimmers so you can see what I mean. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the colors and the texture of the glittery shimmers in this palette, but again, it’s all about personal preference. These just aren’t colors that I usually reach for myself, but if they are colors you love, rock on!
I’ve also included a close up of the mattes so you can kind of visualize the consistency. These felt a bit thin when swatched but not chalky. Since the consistency is a bit thin, the swatches were ever so slightly streaky as you can see in the photo above; however, that doesn’t necessarily mean the final result will be patchy. There is a nice amount of pigment in the mattes with just a single application, and the thinner consistency of the shadows allow for smooth blending with a brush.
When I first looked at this palette, I wasn’t sure how I felt about a gray color since I tend to prefer warm colors, but I think it goes well with the color story of this palette. I think the color story here is pretty cool, and I’m glad I have these colors in my collection now to play around with. I don’t think this is a palette I’m going to reach for often, but I think I might reach for the mattes when I’m feeling adventurous and want an intense pop of color on the lower lash line. As for the glittery shades, I don’t see myself using them just because they aren’t really the type of colors or texture I go for. Final verdict: love the mattes but the shimmers aren’t my favorite.
