Colourpop California Love Palette Review + Swatches

Another lovely palette gifted to me by my sweet friend Cindy.

When this palette first came out, I thought it had a really beautiful color story. I tend to go for more warm colors when it comes to eyeshadow, so this palette was right up my alley. Plus, I was really intrigued by the vibrant yellow tangerine shade, Sequoia.

This palette has twelve total shades and is made using a cardboard construction. I think the packaging design is pretty cute and coordinates well with the colors of the eyeshadows inside. I really like the gold accents; I think it adds to the sunset, golden hour theme. This palette does not include a mirror.

Top row (left to right): Diego, Cruisin’, HWY 1, Gold Rush, Sequoia, Gnarly

Bottom row (left to right): El Capitan, Surfrider, Caheunga, Mission, The Bay, Laguna

All swatches are single swipe with no primer underneath except for El Capitan, which has glitter glue underneath.

These eyeshadows from Colourpop are fairly pigmented and easy to work with. I would only really look out for El Capitan and HWY 1. El Capitan is just chunky glitter with no binder or base. A glitter glue is required for use or else it won’t stick. I also find that HWY 1 can get a little patchy as it likes to stick to the first area it touches. I recommend using an extremely light hand and building up with this shade. Personally, I don’t see myself using the pressed glitter, El Capitan. It’s too uniformly chunky for my tastes, and I’m not a huge fan of the color combo in this glitter format. I think I would have preferred a shimmery highlight shade lighter than Cruisin’ instead of pressed glitter. I think pressed glitter could be fun, but the one in this palette doesn’t excite me.

Overall, though, I like the color scheme and how there are a variety of textures in this palette. With the exception HWY 1 and El Capitan, the formulas are easy to use and have good pigmentation. I think the colors in this palette are coordinated quite well. This is a fun palette that takes neutral warm browns and supplements them with soft washes of bright color.
